The symptoms all point to the GEM (General Electronic Module) which is part of the PJB (Passenger Junction Box). The Mk 2 doesn't have a BCM. Don't overlook the possibility of low battery voltage causing spurious problems but the GEM itself is where I'd be looking. There is a diagnostic test you can try that's detailed in the how-to section.
3 posts · Joined 2013. #8 · Sep 29, 2013. Actually, I found the module. There's a small door on the passenger left foot panel that allows that panel to be removed. Behind that panel was the airbag module located just under and slightly ahead of the shifter. Now it's off to myairbags.com.
